Critères de pollution par hydrocarbures dans les sédiments marins. Étude appliquée à la pollution du "Bohlen" ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel; Roucache, J.
In October 16, 1976, the tanker "Bohlen" was wrecked in the Mer d'Iroise, at about 35 miles of Brest, and lossed about 7 000 t of Boscan crude oil. The coast of Brittany was polluted by 3 000 t, and 4000 t were dispersed in the marine environment. In July 1977, 23 surface sediment samples were collected to look for the traces of oil spill in the sea bottom, 9 months after the shipwreck. Only one sediment was very iittle polluted by the Boscan crude oil. Elsewhere, two other kinds of oil pollution were observed in sorne sediment samples. Severa! quantitative and qualitative criteria were used to research sorne oil pollution in the marine sediments and to know the origin: hydrocarbon concentrations, ratios total organic extra ct 1 organic carbon,...

Detection of early effects of a single herbicide (diuron) and a mix of herbicides and pharmaceuticals (diuron, isoproturon, ibuprofen) on immunological parameters of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) spat ArchiMer
Luna-acosta, Andrea; Renault, Tristan; Thomas-guyon, Helene; Faury, Nicole; Saulnier, Denis; Budzinski, Helene; Le Menach, K.; Pardon, P.; Fruitier-arnaudin, I.; Bustamante, Paco.
In the context of massive summer mortality events of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, the aim of this study was to investigate the early effects on genes, enzymes and haemocyte parameters implicated in immune defence mechanisms in C. gigas oysters exposed to a potentially hostile environment, i.e. to an herbicide alone or within a mixture. Following 2 h of exposure to the herbicide diuron at 1 mu g L-1 the repression of different genes implicated in immune defence mechanisms in the haemocytes and the inhibition of enzyme activities, such as laccase-type phenoloxidase (PO) in the plasma, were observed. The inhibition of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the plasma was also observed after 6 and 24 h of exposure. In the mixture with the herbicides...

Diagnostic and prognostic characteristics of phytotoxicity caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis Forst. F. (Anacardiaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sant'Anna-Santos,Bruno F.; Azevedo,Aristéa A.; Silva,Luzimar C.; Oliva,Marco A..
The goal of this study was to determine the symptoms and microscopic damage caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis, a fluoride-sensitive species. The plants were exposed to simulated fog with fluoride (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1) for 20 min daily during four consecutive days. Samples from leaflets without any apparent fluoride injury were collected to microscopic analysis. The percentage of necrosed leaf area was measured, and the level of pollutant in the dry matter from the basal and apical portions of the plant was determined. The necroses began 24 h after the first simulation mainly from the base of the leaflets. A higher level of necrosis was observed at the apical portion of the plants, a region of higher fluoride accumulation. The damage on the...

Distribution and abundance of Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) in an impacted watershed in South-east Brazil BJB
MARQUES,M. M. G. S. M.; BARBOSA,F. A. R.; CALLISTO,M..
Patterns of abundance and distribution of chironomid midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) in the middle Rio Doce basin were analysed. Human activities (mining, steel processing, and Eucalyptus spp. forestry) contribute to environmental degradation and low water quality in this watershed. Physical and chemical water traits (dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, electric conductivity, phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations) of 20 sampling points were used in a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to establish the best and worst water quality. Sampling points recorded as the most polluted showed low genus richness of Chironomidae, less than five genera from the total 23, and dominance of the genus Chironomus, a bioindicator of environmental stress. Following...

Conservation Units (CU) aim to contribute to the balance between human and environmental demand, by protecting natural resources and biological communities. In this study we examined the differences in the attributes of the fish community in four stretches of an urban stream, two inside and two outside the CU, without vegetation cover, and tested the hypothesis that the presence of riparian vegetation is positively reflected in the attributes of fish fauna. Five species were caught, distributed into four orders and five families. Attributes like richness, abundance, dominance, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and evenness were estimated and significant differences were detected for continuous stretches considering stream flow direction. The first stretches (URBI...

Does Britain or the United States Have the Right Gasoline Tax? AgEcon
Parry, Ian W.H.; Small, Kenneth A..
This paper develops an analytical framework for assessing the second-best optimal level of gasoline taxation taking into account unpriced pollution, congestion, and accident externalities, and interactions with the broader fiscal system. We provide calculations of the optimal taxes for the US and the UK under a wide variety of parameter scenarios, with the gasoline tax substituting for a distorting tax on labor income. Under our central parameter values, the second-best optimal gasoline tax is $1.01/gal for the US and $1.34/gal for the UK. These values are moderately sensitive to alternative parameter assumptions. The congestion externality is the largest component in both nations, and the higher optimal tax for the UK is due mainly to a higher assumed...

Economic growth and pollution in the long run: the case of carbon dioxide AgEcon
Burke, Paul J..
The concept underpinning the Environmental Kuznets Curve is that economic growth results in reduced pollution in the long run. In this report, an extension of Andreoni and Levinson’s (2001) theoretical model is presented. It demonstrates that an Environmental Kuznets Curve relationship can occur because high incomes allow more adoption of low-emission technologies at higher income levels. Evidence on the determinants of carbon dioxide emissions changes for OECD countries over the period 1961-2004 is presented. It highlights the importance of technology adoption in explaining whether countries have achieved emissions reductions at the same time as experiencing long-run economic growth. However, it is shown that technology adoption is affected by policy...

Economic Growth and the Environment with Clean and Dirty Consumption AgEcon
Orecchia, Carlo; Tessitore, Maria Elisabetta.
This paper aims to verify the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) or inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation in the context of endogenous growth. An important feature of this study is that the EKC is examined in the presence of pollution as a by product of consumption activities; also, pollution is a stock variable rather than a flow and tends to accumulate over time. In order to highlight the role of consumption on the environment, consumers do not consider directly pollution in the maximization problem and are assumed to choose between two different consumption types, characterized by a different impact on the environment (i.e. dirty and clean consumption). We find that substitution of dirty...

Effect of indigo dye effluent on the growth, biomass production and phenotypic plasticity of Scenedesmus quadricauda(Chlorococcales) Anais da ABC (AABC)
CHIA,MATHIAS A.; MUSA,RILWAN I..
The effect of indigo dye effluent on the freshwater microalgaScenedesmus quadricauda ABU12 was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The microalga was exposed to different concentrations of the effluent obtained by diluting the dye effluent from 100 to 175 times in bold basal medium (BBM). The growth rate of the microalga decreased as indigo dye effluent concentration increased (p <0.05). The EC50 was found to be 166 dilution factor of the effluent. Chlorophyll a, cell density and dry weight production as biomarkers were negatively affected by high indigo dye effluent concentration, their levels were higher at low effluent concentrations (p <0.05). Changes in coenobia size significantly correlated with the dye effluent concentration. A...

Effects of the proximity from an industrial plant on fish assemblages in the rio Paraíba do Sul, southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pinto,Benjamin Carvalho Teixeira; Peixoto,Magna Galvão; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
This work aims to analyze changes in the fish assemblages along a longitudinal reaches of the rio Paraíba do Sul, one of the most used Brazilian aquatic systems, to assess the river "health" and to identify eventual recovery trends. Standardized monthly samplings were carried out at six sites, from October 1997 to September 1999, using casting, sieves, seine and gill nets. Three zones were searched: upstream (Z I), downstream (Z III) and nearby the source of pollution (Z II). Three univariate distribution methods were used: ABC (abundance-biomass curves), K-dominance curves, and geometric class's distribution. Additionally, cluster analysis was applied to detect eventual patterns. The ABC and K-dominance curves showed Z II with evident indication of stress...

Effet du pétrole de l'"Amoco Cadiz" sur les oiseaux de mer. Bilan provisoire ArchiMer
Monnat, J.y..
Immediatly following the AMOCO CADIZ oil spill, the S.E.P.N.B. carried out health centers for oiled birds from Finistère, and estimated the impact of the oil spill on seabirds. In the whole, 15 to 20 000 birds are dead because of the AMOCO CADIZ oil spill. 41 species have been oiled, among which 35 usually live in marine environment. The species most stressed belong to alcidae. The mortality rate (0,1 bird/ton of oil) seems to be, at. present day, the lowest rate never mentionned in the litterature.

Elemental concentrations and heavy metal pollution in sediments and suspended matter from the Belgian North Sea and the Scheldt estuary OMA
Van Alsenoy, V.; Bernard, P.; Van Grieken, R..
The elemental composition of sediment and suspended matter samples from the Belgian coastal and offshore regions of the Southern Bight of the North Sea and from the Scheldt estuary has been determined using X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry.Special attention was given to the heavy metals of the black and grey lists. The bulk sediment and the clay/silt fraction were analyzed. The average heavy metal contents in the fraction <63 µm were comparable to the levels in the suspended matter. Different normalization techniques led to the identification of two different populations of sediments. Most of the sediments were enriched in Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Zn but no enrichment was found for Cu and Ni. Comparing these data with older data indicates...

Emerging Rights and Risks in the Management of Water Quantity and Water Quality AgEcon
O'Sullivan, Dan.
Using transferable water permits has been identified by economists as a necessary tool to efficiently allocate water to its highest valued use. Australian governments have seized the concept and begun to provide mechanisms that separate rights to water from land ownership and allow flexibility to trade the rights. Water trading is slowly taking shape but has been challenged regarding ownership rights and technical applications. Several key studies and projects are now testing a similar process to be used to develop ownership and incentives for diffuse water pollution. This paper analyses how rights to water quantity and water quality are emerging, the policy tools being used, and current challenges for decision makers.
